I was born and raised in Central Massachusetts and have been visiting the flagship store in Deerfield for almost my entire life.
Now, 30+ years later and for the past 8 years, I've been taking my son. He was around 2 years old the first time we visited and he smiled, kicked and giggled as he caught the snow flakes as they fell around the forest of trees, his eyes full of wonder when we visited the toy shop and he picked out his first favorite stuffed animal, I watched his face light up everytime he spotted the train that circled the entire building, his little fingers eagerly pointing to it.
Now, he is ten years old, and it is still one of his favorite places to go. He gets a $100 Yankee Candle GiftCard every Birthday and every Christmas so we have an excuse to go to Deerfield (and maybe a few in between for good grades, good behavior and I usually sneak a $25 one into his Easter Basket too)
Our favorite time of year to visit is the Fall so we can stock up on our favorite scents, and purchase some mini candles to take on picnics with us.
Everytime we go, he makes me smell every new scent, favorites go right into the cart (Midsummers Night, Fall Leaves) then he pleads with me until I smile, relent and spend an hour in the toy area, where he has found some of his favorite toys over the years - from a beautiful train set with tracks, to the simplest little treasures, like marbles, and silly putty.
I've been asked why, "I don't go to Walmart and get their brand, because they smell just as good (to which - I highly disagree, sorry) and are cheaper"
I tell them that, Yankee Candle, for us, goes beyond simply buying candles. It's a family tradition, and a place that holds many wonderful memories for us.
Storm Watch (which has been retired for years, sadly) reminded me of every time a summer storm passed through, and the sky darkened. I would light the candle, open a window and listen to the pitter patter of rain on the roof.
Midsummer's Night reminds me of sitting in my rocking chair in the early hours of the morning in late July 2016 with my infant son asleep on my chest after his little belly was full. He's loved that candle his entire life, I think.
Pink Sands, reminds me of all the mornings spent on the patio of our hotel room in Maine, having a cup of coffee and listening to the waves in the distance, a comforting wakeup before a long day at the beach.
Fall Leaves, or Autumn Wreath, 🍂 would be burning on the porch Halloween Night while I gave out candy or on those perfect Fall Evenings where we could open the windows and take in the crisp, cool air that would mix perfectly with the scent of the candle. The warm glow, so comforting while we watched the leaves fall majestically off the trees to the ground, and then listened as they were carried down the street by the wind.
The smell of Balsam and Cedar lingers in the air every Christmas morning while my son opens his gifts and we give each other big hugs, and take time to appreciate everything we have, especially each other. The flickering, beautiful glow lights up the large frosted, snowy glass candle holder with silver glitter and white trees I bought many, many years ago at Yankee Candle, which is carefully packed in bubble wrap after New Years, and taken out after Thanksgiving every year.
And we will never tire of the fun and adventures we have just getting lost in the magic of Yankee Candle before coming home, and burning our favorites before bed while we snuggle up under a soft blanket and read a book or simply relax with a cup of cocoa.
So, Yankee Candle, for me, is so much more than a trip to a store to get some candles. It's decades of cherished memories, and unforgettable moments both big and small...Yankee Candle has brought warmth and joy to our lives, it brings us together and reminds us to take time to stop and enjoy every moment, and has helped make our house a home for decades. ❤
((Now, you just need to revive Storm Watch for me 😉)
