Scared to death
Post-Delivery FeedbackOct 11, 2025
Camping World is a good company and I have done business with them before. I will do business with them again. However, this latest online purchase was a "minor disaster". I purchased a Roadmaster Car Tow Dolly that had to be delivered by freight because it weighed over 700 pounds (550 for the dolly and 150 in crating). I was aware of this delivery issue but unaware of the assembly challenge. This was not Camping World's fault because they offered to put it together for me for $1200. I declined because that increased the price of the dolly from $3500 to $4700 which is a 33% increase in price. Delivery was free which was positive. (Side note: I'm trying to be positive in this review!). So I thought, "How difficult could it be"? So I got a competent friend and we decided to put it together. That in retrospect could have been a mistake. Now I know why Camping World wanted $1200 to put it together. Assembly was a pure unadulterated bitch. Some of the parts were so heavy they could barely be picked up by "two people" (dolly deck - about 110 lbs.). However, assembly is not my complaint. I signed up for it and I got both barrels. The instructions were fairly good but not adequate enough to do a professional job. For example, step #2 was to install the wheels and tires, which we did. The next step was to install the fenders. However, if you install the wheels before the fenders, there's very little room to install the fender bolts and nuts. So we had to take the heavy tires off to install the fenders. At this point, we discarded the instructions because they could only be used as a vague guide. The wiring instructions were almost non-existent (i.e. attach this wire to the corresponding wire). What corresponding wire? No pics or detailed wiring instructions which kept us guessing on connecting what wire to what? If the dolly is wired incorrectly, the lights will not work and we'll be guessing where we made our mistake! However, what we did learn from the instructions is that this is a very dangerous product. There is a "WARNING" in most every paragraph. "If you do this incorrectly, you could damage your property or lose your life". That's startling but at least Roadmaster has CYA. That's where I'm going next. This product does not have the necessary safety features to be driven on the open road at any speed. Like the instructions say, "This product is DANGEROUS"! Case in point.... the tire stop on the front of the dolly is not high enough to keep the car from rolling over the front on entry. If this happens, (WHICH IT DID TO ME) the dolly gets trapped under the car between the front and back wheels. I had to call a wrecking service and it took the driver two hours to remove the dolly from under the car at a cost of $215.00 plus damage to my car finish. Why am I complaining, you ask? Wasn't I warned? Yes, I was warned but not about the tire stop design deficiency. How does a one inch (1") tire stop a 4000 pound vehicle accellerating up an inclined ramp. Answer: It doesn't and with disasterous results. Camping World should demand design changes or stop selling this product. My final comment is that I'm afraid to mount my SUV on this dolly and drive it on the road. What's going to happen next? The ditch....the hospital?
