I'll be honest — I was skeptical when I first signed up for GameFly. The idea of waiting for a physical disc to arrive in the mail felt outdated in a world of instant digital downloads. But after a few months of using the service, I've completely changed my tune.
The concept is dead simple. You build a queue of games you want, they ship one (or two, depending on your plan) to your door, you play at your own pace, and mail it back when you're done. No late fees, no deadlines. I've held onto games for a week, sometimes two, and never once felt rushed.
What I Love About It
The catalog is where GameFly really earns its keep. Thousands of titles across PS5, Xbox Series X/S, PS4, Xbox One, and Nintendo Switch means I'm never short on options. My favorite use case? Taking a chance on games I'd never drop $70 on. I've discovered some of my favorite titles that way — games I would have completely skipped at full price.
The buy-at-a-discount option is another underrated perk. If I end up loving something, I can purchase it for well below retail and keep it. That's happened more times than I expected.
Pricing sits around $15–$25 a month depending on your plan. When a single new release costs $70, the math works itself out pretty quickly if you play even a couple of games a month.
Where It Falls Short
Shipping is the biggest variable. I'm fortunate to live close to a distribution center, so I usually see two-to-three day turnarounds. Friends in more rural areas haven't been as lucky. If you play fast and burn through titles, the wait between games can feel like a drag.
New releases are also hit or miss. Don't expect to play something the day it launches — high-demand titles often show "Long Wait," and GameFly isn't really built for day-one gaming. That's what Game Pass is for.
Bottom Line
GameFly isn't for everyone, but it's absolutely for me. If you're the type who enjoys single-player games, likes physical media, or just refuses to pay full price for something you'll finish in a weekend, it's hard to beat. I've saved a noticeable amount on my gaming budget since subscribing, and I've played more games because of it — not fewer.
Give it a shot. You might be surprised how much you like getting mail again.
