I’ve long been interested in trying one of these Sterling basses. I own a US 2004 MM Stingray and knew the Sterling line to be the more affordable import version made in Indonesia. I selected a blemished 2H model that was last in stock. I knew it wouldn’t be perfect but I repair guitars on the side and wasn’t too worried. I really just wanted to A/B it against my US version. Bass arrived double boxed, thankfully, as FedEx did their best to beat the tar out of the outer box. There was no case or bag included in the purchase. First impression out of the box was it was definitely pretty (charcoal mist) with two small imperfections in the paint. The neck was flat, the board dry, and the frets had sprouted with the first fret not even seated completely. As always, I removed the strings it came with, beveled the fret edges before rounding and polishing, re-seated the fret, and oiled the fretboard. Installed a set of Labella rounds, added some relief to the neck, and cleaned up and lubed the nut. All told, I put about 45 min into setup and it played excellently. If this had been a $2500+ US MM Stingray, I would’ve been upset, but as a blemished, import version, I’m extremely happy with it. Plays really well, and I love the 5-way selector switch with all of the different tones to choose from. Overall, I’m very happy with my purchase.
